When unpopular, awkward high-schooler Arnie Cunningham buys a rusted-out 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine from a sinister old man, his best friend Dennis watches the gawky outcast transform — growing confident, cocky, and obsessed as he pours himself into restoring the car. But Christine is no ordinary automobile, and the bond between boy and machine begins to curdle into something jealous and possessive. A small-town coming-of-age story that idles into pure American horror, all chrome, gasoline, and rock 'n' roll.
Significance A Stephen King novel published under his own name in 1983, adapted the same year into John Carpenter's now-classic film — a cornerstone of King's "haunted machine" canon.
How to spot a true first 30-second check
A true 1st/1st needs BOTH the book and the jacket verified. A first-state jacket on a later or book-club book — or the reverse — is a married copy, not a first.
What to look for
- Decisive: priced + coded front flap — $16.95 and jacket code 041 63083. No price on the flap = book-club jacket.
- Copyright line ALONE is a trap: the BCE prints the identical "First published in 1983 by The Viking Press" — never call it on wording.
- Trade first carries NO printer gutter code; a gutter code (e.g. N26 / N38 = Sept 1983) on ~p.470 means book-club.
- BCE also tells: blind-stamp (dot/circle/square) on lower-rear board, smaller trim, thinner paper, lighter weight.
- Watch price-clipped jackets (can mask a club/later state), married jackets, and facsimile DJs — check copyright page AND flap together.
- Don't confuse with the Grant signed/numbered limited (1,000, Gervais art, red slipcase) — a parallel deluxe, not the textual first.
- Rear jacket barcode (9 780670 220267) prints on BOTH the first AND the book-club edition — Christine's BCE KEEPS it. Do NOT cross-apply the Different Seasons rule (its BCE DELETES the barcode); BCE tells are TITLE-SPECIFIC.
- The rear 'Stephen King and friend' author-photo caption is CONTESTED as a first-vs-BCE tell (primary photos disagree) — treat as non-decisive, not proof either way.

The copyright leaf and binding are fully photographed and consistent with the 1983 Viking issue, but the jacket is not the recorded US first state — the flap-top strip prints "$20.95" with no "ISBN 0-670-22026-4 FPT >$16.95" line and a blank flap foot where 041 63083 prints — and the block's own club-vs-trade test at ~p.470 was never shot.
- Jacket price — Photo 8 gives the whole front flap with its corner intact, and it reads against the copy: the cream top strip carries a printed "$20.95" at its right end with the strip blank to the left of it where the first state prints "ISBN 0-670-22026-4 FPT >$16.95", and the flap foot below "(Continued on back flap)" is blank where 041 63083 prints — so what is photographed is a priced flap in some other state, not the first-state flap.
- Copyright — Photo 10 shows the leaf in full and legible — "Copyright © 1983 by Stephen King / All rights reserved / First published in 1983 by The Viking Press / 40 West 23rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10010 / Published simultaneously in Canada by Penguin Books Canada Limited", the Donald M. Grant limited note, LCCN 82-20105, ISBN 0-670-22026-4 and the "Printed in U.S.A / Set in Linotron Garamond" colophon with no later-printing line — but the club edition echoes this wording exactly, so it corroborates and proves nothing.
- Number line — No number line anywhere on the copyright leaf (photo 10), correct for the Viking issue and likewise shared with the club printing.
- Binding — Photos 5 and 7 show the book out of its jacket in edge profile — red paper board edges over a black cloth spine with red-and-white striped headbands, and plain cream page edges carrying no publisher topstain.
- Dust jacket — Photos 0, 1 and 4 show the correct DeCamps '58 Fury front panel, the "STEPHEN KING / CHRISTINE / VIKING" spine and the rear "EXIT ONLY" author panel with the "Stephen King and friend" caption over the ISBN 0-670-22026-4 box, and photo 14's rear flap carries the Viking Press colophon, "40 West 23rd Street" and "Printed in U.S.A." — but on this title our rubric records the rear ISBN bar as printed on the club jacket too and the caption as contested, so none of this discriminates.
- Gutter code — The decisive book tell was never shot — the interior frames run title page, copyright, contents, prologue and stop at pp.166–167 (photo 13) — so ask for a straight-on frame of the foot and inner gutter of page ~470, where an "N"-cycle code (N26/N38) means a club textblock and none means the trade first.
- Boards (faces) — The jacket-off frames are edge views only, so neither board face was pictured; ask for the front and rear boards photographed flat out of the jacket, above all the lower rear board where the book-club edition's blind-stamp dot sits.
Both halves of the first-state jacket are photographed and fully legible — an uncut flap top reading "ISBN 0-670-22026-4 FPT >$16.95" with "04163083" at the flap foot — on a correct Viking binding also shown jacket-off in the same set, leaving the ~p.470 gutter check as the one outstanding item.
- Jacket price — Photo 7 shows the top of the front flap uncut and unclipped, reading "ISBN 0-670-22026-4 FPT >$16.95" in full — the decisive first-state jacket tell for this title — and the flap is photographed folded over a book, not lying loose.
- Dust jacket — That same frame carries "04163083" (the 041 63083 jacket code) at the flap foot below "(Continued on back flap)", while photos 0, 3, 4 and 5 show the DeCamps front panel and "STEPHEN KING / CHRISTINE / VIKING" spine and photo 6 the rear flap's Viking Press colophon over "40 West 23rd Street / Printed in U.S.A." — the rear-panel ISBN bar in photo 4 being shared with the club jacket and so non-probative.
- Copyright — Photo 2 reads sharply — "First published in 1983 by The Viking Press / 40 West 23rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10010" with the Grant limited note, LCCN 82-20105 and ISBN 0-670-22026-4, no later-printing line — corroborating only, since the club edition repeats this wording verbatim.
- Number line — None on the copyright leaf (photo 2), and the "Also by" list on photo 1 ends at Different Seasons and Danse Macabre, which is right for 1983.
- Binding — Photos 8, 9 and 10 show the book out of its jacket — red paper front board with a silver "SK", black cloth spine lettered red "STEPHEN KING" and silver "Christine" with "Viking" at the foot, and a plain rear board carrying no club blind-stamp — matching the jacketed frames in the same set, though no single frame lifts this jacket off this block.
- Endpapers / edges — Photos 16 and 17 show plain unprinted cream endpapers and photo 11 cream page edges with no publisher topstain — descriptive only, since our rubric records no authoritative endpaper or edge state for this title, and the foxing there is condition rather than edition.
- Gutter code — The single outstanding item: the text pages photographed are p.7 (photo 13), pp.154–155 (photo 14) and the final p.526 (photo 15, its foot clean), but not ~p.470, so ask for the foot and inner gutter of page ~470 where a club textblock would carry an N26/N38 code.
Confirmed Viking first — the priced/coded flap AND a trade body (bare boards, silver SK, clean rear board with no club blind-stamp) are shown on one copy. The water damage is a condition/value caveat, not an edition flaw.
- Jacket price — Front-flap base reads 'FPT >$16.95' (photo 3) — the decisive priced flap, pictured and unclipped; excludes the BCE.
- Jacket code 041 63083 — Code '04163083' visible bottom-left of front-flap text (photo 2).

- Condition (water damage) — Seller notes water staining at the text-block bottom edge/heel + a closed spine-heel jacket tear — request clearer close-ups of the wet area to grade value. This is condition only; the edition is confirmed.
The 041 63083 first-state code is legible at the foot of an uncut flap on a jacket shown together with the book it belongs to, but the "$16.95" itself vanishes under a Brodart band and a crease in every frame and not one text page was photographed.
- Dust jacket — Photo 4 lays the jacket flat inside-up and shows "04163083" legible at the foot of the front flap below "(Continued on back flap)", with the rear flap's "Jacket photograph © 1982 Andrew Unangst / Jacket art © Craig DeCamps 1982 / Jacket design by R. - Jacket price — The "$16.95" is not legible in any frame — the top strip reads "ISBN 0-670-22026-4 FPT" and then runs under a Brodart Fold-On band and a crease exactly where ">$16.95" prints (photos 4 and 5); the cream strip continues past "FPT" at full height with no diagonal cut visible, so nothing in frame suggests a clip, but ask for the protector off and a straight-on close-up of the right-hand end of that strip.

A jacketless Viking-imprint copy documented from the boards to the copyright leaf — correct two-tone binding, silver front-board "SK", rear board plain and unstamped, 1983 Viking statement with no number line — but the one tell that separates trade from club on the block, the ~p.470 gutter, was never photographed, and the listing never actually says the copy is jacketless.

- Dust jacket — No jacket appears in any frame and the listing never declares the copy jacketless — the title and description call it a "Trade Edition" and the item specifics list "1st Edition" with no "Dust Jacket" — so ask the seller to state plainly that no dust jacket is included and to photograph the book exactly as it will ship, since the book-only exception opens only when the listing says so.
Genuine Viking trade first — priced flap + bare copyright + no number line confirmed; just nail the jacket code and rear board.

The Viking Press trade hardcover (1983, ISBN 0-670-22026-4 / 978-0-670-22026-7; published April 29, 1983) is the true collected first edition, first printing. The Donald M. Grant signed/numbered limited (1,000 copies, illustrated by Stephen Gervais, red slipcase) is a same-year deluxe PARALLEL edition that runs much higher in value but is NOT a small-press predecessor that supersedes the trade as the textual first (unlike Grant's Dark Tower or Philtrum's Eyes of the Dragon). For standard collecting, the Viking trade hardcover is "the first." Not a paperback original.

Also watch for: (1) PRICE-CLIPPED jackets passed off as firsts — clipping can hide a later-printing or club jacket; a true-first jacket shows $16.95 + code 041 63083 on the front flap. (2) BOOK-CLUB textblock sold as "first edition" because the copyright wording matches — check for the rear-board blind-stamp, the missing jacket price, and especially a printer GUTTER CODE (N26/N38 etc.) on ~p.470 (the trade first has none). Collector/dealer consensus figure (publisher never disclosed an audited count). stephenkingcollector.com and aggregated King first-edition guides list the Viking Press 1983 trade hardcover first edition of Christine with a print run of 270,000 copies, given as the Viking trade first printing.
First-state points & errata
No widely-documented text errata / first-state vs second-state textual point is established for the Viking Christine across the collector sources consulted; the first printing is distinguished by the copyright statement + absence of number line + correct $16.95 / 041-63083-coded jacket rather than by a typo. The rear-jacket author-photo "1957 vs 1958 Plymouth" detail is collector trivia, not a state-distinguishing point. First-state textual erratum: UNVERIFIED (none confirmed). Note that stephenkingcollector.com itself flags Christine as "hard to authenticate as a true 1st edition" because the jacket price is essentially the sole discriminator from the club jacket.

A comparable Grant signed limited #94 of 1,000 realized in the same ~$1,500–1,700 band at Nate D. Sanders. Unsigned Viking trade firsts in fine/fine routinely close in the ~$40–120 range on eBay sold/AbeBooks sold (2023–2025); one European eBay sold copy at ~$99. Note: I could not surface a clean Heritage Auctions price-realized for an UNSIGNED Viking trade first — it is too common/low-value to appear regularly at major auction; the four-figure auction records are all the Grant signed limited, not the trade copy.
Book-club edition (the trap): $10–25. The Book-of-the-Month / book club issue is the dominant trap on this title — physically near-identical to the Viking trade first. Tell: a small blind-stamp (dot, square, circle, or leaf) in the lower rear board near the spine, an UNPRICED jacket flap (no $16.95), thinner/cheaper "vinyl-feel" boards, and often a slightly smaller trim. REAR-BARCODE CAVEAT (locked 2026-06-25): the rear-jacket barcode (9 780670 220267) is present on BOTH the trade first AND the book-club jacket — Christine's BCE KEEPS it, the OPPOSITE of Different Seasons (whose BCE deletes the barcode), so a present barcode proves NOTHING here; never cross-apply another title's rule. The decisive jacket tell is the priced/coded UNCLIPPED front flap ($16.95 / 041 63083, corner intact); an intact-but-unpriced flap = book-club. CONDITION & JACKET: This is a jacket-driven title — value lives in an UNCLIPPED jacket showing the original $16.95 price; a price-clipped flap roughly halves desirability and kills "fine" status. Red/black boards are prone to spine-fade and silver/red lettering rub; the white-heavy jacket shows edge-wear, soiling, and the common spine-toning easily, so genuine fine/fine commands the top of the range while VG/VG drops to ~$25–50. SIGNED PREMIUM: a verified King signature/inscription on the Viking trade first lifts it to roughly $700–1,500+ (authentication matters — King forgeries are common). The Grant SIGNED LIMITED (1 of 1,000, slipcased) is a different animal at ~$1,200–1,800 near-fine and more if pristine. THE #1 DISCRIMINATOR FOR THIS TITLE: the rear-board BLIND STAMP.
