Confirmed sales: Dealer/market anchors rather than major-house hammer prices (this title rarely hits Heritage/PBA unsigned): unsigned fine/fine trade firsts are reported to realize ~$75–250 on eBay SOLD and AbeBooks/Biblio fulfilled listings (2023–2025) — a dealer/market observation, not sales we hold plates for; signed-and-inscribed first/first copies with intact $22.95 jacket transact ~$1,500–3,500 via AbeBooks dealers (e.g., CWO Books, Ernestoic Books, VeryFineBooks listings 2024–2025); traycased/slipcased signed-with-COA copies asked/sold higher (~$3,500–5,000+). No verified Heritage Auctions lot for an unsigned trade copy was located. We hold two realized comps of our own for an unsigned trade first, and both cleared below the fine/fine band — the $99.99 on a condition we graded ourselves, the $122.50 for reasons we cannot name, having never graded that copy. FIRST, $99.99: item 336612512567, seller tsteves456 — sold 2026-07-11 (the listing’s eBay end time, read on a full-detail re-probe; our lean sweep query had blanked the end time on every stored row, which is why we had believed no sale date was published). The price mechanism was measured at full detail on 2026-07-24: a fixed-price listing with Best Offer NOT enabled and no offers recorded against it, quantity 1, one unit sold, start price and end price both $99.99 in native USD — so here the list price genuinely is the realized price, with no accepted offer hidden behind it. On edition it is our own CONFIRMED_FIRST at cohort strength rather than a screening call: the Collectible-tier re-verify read all 16 of 16 seller plates, recorded confidence "high", and photographed BOTH decisive tells on the one copy. Book tell: the copyright page reading "First published in 1986 by Viking Penguin Inc." with the "Set in Garamond No. 3" type-credit line standing CLEAN, nothing stated beneath it (a later printing adds a dated line there). Jacket tell: the unclipped first-issue price on the inside front flap, "ISBN 0-670-81302-8 FPT >*22.95". Both tells were photographed on the one copy in the same set of frames, so this is not a jacket read off a second book — and note that ISBN 0-670-81302-8 is carried by every Viking printing of the title, so an ISBN match is no defence whatever against a first jacket on a later book. The club traps were excluded on the decisive points: a priced flap carrying no "Book Club Edition" line, and — per our own published marker bullets for this copy — grey (not club-white) endpapers and a plain rear board with no BOMC blind-stamp. Our condition grade of record is "VG+ to Near Fine book / VG+ jacket (tanning, short closed tear, light bottom-edge stain; unclipped)". One discrepancy stays on the record rather than being resolved: our Collectible-tier read notes the seller's description called the jacket "price clipped," while the photographs show the $22.95 intact and our own listing record summarised the seller as saying the jacket was "present and unclipped." The listing has ended and the description can no longer be re-read, so we record the conflict and draw no conclusion from it about what the buyer believed he was buying. SECOND, $122.50: item 257566075034, seller gondolins_remnant, captured by our 2026-06-24 liveness sweep (the 2026-06-22 watchlist harvest that carried it — a transient file — records an eBay end time of that same day). A correction to our own record, plainly stated. This note previously called it a fixed-price, non-best-offer sale in which "the list price is the realized price." That was wrong, and worse, it was never measured: it came from a truncated eBay API response that returns no Best-Offer block at all on a completed listing, which we then read as an affirmative "no offers were made." A full-detail re-probe on 2026-07-24 returned the listing type as an auction opened at $0.99, so $122.50 is a HAMMER — arm's-length, set by competitive bidding, and a better signal than a list price; that probe response is not persisted in our files, so the finding is dated to that probe and claims nothing more. At $122.50 the copy sits inside the reported $75–250 unsigned-first band, as the old note said. The edition claim is cited rather than re-minted: this copy was verified as a first/first by hand during the 2026-06-24 liveness apply, the marker record was not retained, and the only surviving entry — an eBay watchlist import, 15 photos — still reads UNCERTAIN / "markers not yet checked" with no markers listed. The figure stands under our rule against deleting what proof-in-hand established; the tells are cited from that hand read, not from a record we can show you. We correct one further detail of that old wording while we are in it: it placed the FPT price on the "rear flap," whereas our markergrid and every photographed copy put the $22.95 on the inside upper FRONT flap — the wording was mistaken, and we are not restating that tell as photographed in any event. And we hold no condition grade of our own for this copy: the seller's own listing graded it "Very Good," which we report but never use as our evidence, so it anchors a price and not a condition rung. ON THE RECORD BUT NOT FOLDED AS FIGURES: $75-level sales appear twice and neither is a comp for a confirmed first, because both graded only LIKELY first — one noted in the 2026-06-24 sweep alongside the $122.50 (that sweep kept no per-listing record, so we cannot say whether it is the same copy), and item 377283701030, recorded SOLD at $75 in our 2026-07-05 sweep; and the shop's own purchase at $67.50 (item 157859122596, owned-conversion #3) — won on a $75 ask via an accepted Best Offer, deliberately excluded from the comp set because a steal is not a clearing price. Everything currently on our own buy board for this title is an ASKING price and not a sale: as of 2026-08-04 the copies we grade CONFIRMED first are asking $55, $79.99, $99.99, $116.25 and $124.99. (An earlier version of this sentence read "$76, $79.99, $116.25 and $304.99"; both outliers have since resolved, and we correct it here rather than quietly restate it. The $304.99 SOLD at its ask on 2026-07-27 and is recorded below as a realized price. The $76 — item 117279124608 — ended UNSOLD on 2026-08-01.) WATCH ITEM, no action taken: three of the four realized sales of a confirmed first we now hold for It — the $122.50, the $99.99, and the excluded $67.50 — cleared under valueLow $150, the fourth ($304.99, below) cleared it, and not one of the four was a Fine/Fine copy, and we hold no realized sale of a documented Fine/Fine unsigned trade first at all, while the reported dealer band above straddles our low end. That is consistent with a range written explicitly for fine/fine dress that none of the three copies tested; it is not the same thing as a low end that has been tested. Should a fourth confirmed first clear sub-$150 in a documented Fine/Fine jacket and boards, valueLow must be re-examined on its merits rather than explained away. THIRD, $304.99 — a realized sale, and the first of ours to clear valueLow. Item 157885047759, seller chancesumsion123: a fixed-price listing that ran from 2026-05-05 and ended 2026-07-27 with eBay recording one sold. The mechanism was re-measured on 2026-08-04 with the July fault removed rather than patched — GetItem at full detail with NO output selectors at all — and the payload contains no Best Offer node anywhere; in the same batch, the same minute, a completed Cycle of the Werewolf listing DID return one, so the instrument discriminates and this absence is real rather than the blind spot that fooled us in July, when every row read identically and that uniformity was the tell. Fixed price, no Best Offer facility, start price and end price both $304.99: the $304.99 asked is the $304.99 paid, and the measurement is on file (ebay-price-probes.json). One limit stands on this and on every sold row we hold — eBay records a sale, not cleared funds; an unpaid or cancelled order is invisible to this instrument. The edition is our call, not the seller's. Our Collectible-tier re-verify read all 24 of 24 frames at confidence "high", with both decisive tells on the one copy: (BOOK, frame 16) the copyright page "First published in 1986 by Viking Penguin Inc.", LCCN 85-41062, ISBN 0-670-81302-8, the printing block ending with "Set in Garamond No. 3" standing CLEAN with nothing beneath it — which is the whole of the first-printing proof for this title, since no printing of It carries a number line and the determinant is the ABSENCE of a dated printing line; (JACKET, frames 7 and 9) the inside upper front flap reading "ISBN 0-670-81302-8 FPT >$22.95", corner intact, with no "Book Club Edition" wording. The married-copy guard is cleared on the frames themselves — the jacket is shown on the book across frames 0, 1, 5 and 23. Now the part that does not flatter us. EVERY record we hold of this copy describes its boards wrongly, and each does it inside the very sentence meant to rule out the book club: one puts a GILT "SK" on the REAR board, another reads grey boards with a blue spine. Our own copy settles it — owned-conversion #3, verified in hand: black paper boards, black cloth spine, and a RED-FOIL "SK" on the FRONT board. Those sentences are struck and we restate no binding claim from them. The verdict never rested on them: the club is excluded on the priced, unlabelled flap, and the married guard on the jacket-on-book frames. Two limits do remain — the copyright-page frame is slightly low-resolution, carried only because the tell there is structural (a line of type stands beneath the Garamond credit, or it does not), and the listing has ended, so the frames can no longer be re-opened. Condition, a value matter and never an edition matter: our grade of record is Near Fine book / Very Good jacket — complete and unclipped beneath mylar, laminate scuffed, light edge wear, faint flap toning, minor handling to the boards, text block clean, tight and sewn. The seller graded it "Very Good"; we report that and do not adopt it. What this changes: it is the first realized sale of a confirmed first we hold that clears valueLow $150, so the interior of the $150–400 band has been transacted once and any sentence of ours saying every realized comp cleared under $150 is withdrawn. It moves no band, and it is not a condition rung: a Near Fine/VG copy at $304.99 against a VG+/Near Fine copy at $99.99 sixteen days earlier is a threefold spread between two comparably-graded copies — dispersion, not a ladder — so we still publish no middle rung, now for a stated reason rather than for want of data. And the other half of the picture, which we will not leave out: item 188567465630, a confirmed first in better dress, asked $300 and ended UNSOLD three weeks earlier, on 2026-07-04. One copy cleared $304.99; a better copy did not clear $300. Our own buy chip on the copy that sold read PASS — we thought it dear — and a buyer paid the ask. Both facts belong on the record.

Book-club edition (the trap): $10–35. Book Club Edition (BOMC) is the dominant trap — white (not grey) endpapers, no $22.95 price on the flap, no ISBN on the front jacket flap, smaller/lighter board with a blind-stamp dot/square on the rear board. Worth a small fraction and routinely mislisted as a "first edition." — a fraction of a true first; never pay first-edition money for one.

Condition is everything because the print run was enormous (~400,000 copies in the first printing, ~800,000 across the five printings that make up the first edition) — these are common, so only Fine/Fine unclipped copies command a premium; reading copies, ex-library copies, and clipped jackets collapse toward $40–80, and that $40–80 is our editorial estimate, not a figure any confirmed sale of ours yet stands behind. Between that estimate and the fine/fine band sits our condition-graded realized comps: a complete, unclipped copy with both decisive tells photographed, graded by us "VG+ to Near Fine book / VG+ jacket (tanning, short closed tear, light bottom-edge stain; unclipped)", which realized $99.99 — recorded SOLD in our 2026-07-24 sweep — below the band on condition, not on edition. One graded sale is an anchor, not a ladder; we publish no middle rung until a second graded comp exists. A signed copy is a 5–15x multiplier (~$1,200–3,500+); an inscribed/dated or association copy more. THE decisive points for this title are two, one on the book and one on the jacket: a copyright page reading "First published in 1986 by Viking Penguin Inc." with NOTHING stated beneath the "Set in Garamond No. 3" type-credit line — later printings ADD a dated line there ("Second Printing - August 1986," "Third Printing - September 1986"), which is what marks the 2nd–5th printings — and the unclipped $22.95 price on the inside upper front flap. Any stated month/year printing line = not a true first. GREY endpapers are correct for the first, photographed on the shop's own copy (owned-conversion #3) and recorded in our marker bullets for the $99.99 comp; but the report that the book club used WHITE endpapers is single-source, so endpaper colour is a supporting cross-check and never the separator on its own, and the club copy is properly excluded on the decisive points instead — an unpriced flap reading "Book Club Edition" and a rear-board blind-stamp. Two notes that save a collector from chasing ghosts: the Doubleday gutter-code point does NOT apply — It is a Viking book, not Doubleday — and NO printing of It, first or later, carries a number line, so the absence of a number line proves nothing whatever.
