UNSIGNED TRADE — TWO VERIFIED COPIES, NO ESTABLISHED PRICE: two genuine unsigned trade firsts sold on eBay in July 2026 and we verified both from the sellers' own plates, but Best Offer was live on both listings and offers were placed on both, and eBay does not disclose an accepted offer amount. Neither figure below is a realized price; each is the asking price we recorded — a ceiling the sale landed at or below — and neither may be quoted as a comp. (1) eBay item 278102751461, seller yellowviper01viper — ASKING $199, sold 2026-07-09 (the listing’s eBay end time, pulled on a full-detail re-probe 2026-07-24). A proper re-probe returns 4 Best Offers placed on it. CONFIRMED_FIRST from 12 plates carrying both decisive tells on the one copy: the copyright page reading "First Printing, November, 1984" with the full ascending number line 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (the book tell — the statement alone is worthless, NAL retained it on later printings), and the UNCLIPPED first-state front flap "U.S. FPT $12.95 / CANADA FPT $15.95" (the jacket tell, and the first-vs-BCE separator for this title); ISBN 0-453-00468-7, black cloth spine over red boards with the NAL colophon foil-stamped at the spine foot, not the BCE leatherette. Our screen graded it "Near Fine book / Near Fine jacket (Fine-minus); arguably Fine/Fine but for minor spine-foil rub and faint shelf wear" — two detractors, not one: a light rub to the red foil title and author lettering on the cloth spine, and faint shelf/handling wear with edge softening at the jacket's spine head and foot under raking light. Against those, the jacket is clean and glossy with the black ground and red handprint intact, the red boards bright and unfaded, the text block and endpapers clean; unclipped, no ex-library, and no inscription — this copy was affirmatively read as carrying none. (2) eBay item 136023737853, seller wjohnston — ASKING $250, sold 2026-07-16 (eBay end time, same re-probe). A proper re-probe returns 1 Best Offer placed on it, and our record carries its list price at end as $250 with no price change logged, so the ask itself was never revised. CONFIRMED_FIRST from 12 plates on the same two decisive tells (the full ascending number line beginning at 1 alongside the retained "First Printing, November, 1984"; unclipped $12.95 / $15.95 first-state flap), plus the correct trade binding — quarter black cloth spine over red paper boards with the title stamped in red, expressly NOT the BCE leatherette — with ISBN 0-453-00468-7 / LC 84-11462 and the NAL BOOKS / New American Library title page. Our screen graded it "Near Fine book / Near Fine jacket (both approaching Fine)", the sole detractor a small brown foxing/soiling spot at the bottom fore-edge of the text block. One honest distinction between the two: this copy is unsigned by INFERENCE only — the listing made no signed claim and no signature appears in the 12 plates, but nothing in our read affirmatively addresses a signature, and on a page where signed copies are quoted at $1,500–$5,000+ that difference is worth stating. These are two distinct copies, not one relisted: different sellers, different listing ids, different listing titles, and different named defects (the spine-foil rub versus the fore-edge spot). Both appraisals are screening-confidence photo reads, never handled in hand. What the pair establishes is only that two clean unsigned NF/NF firsts found buyers in one month on one venue, at or below $199 and $250 respectively, seven days apart; what it does not establish is a number, so no band arithmetic is built on either. CORRECTION (2026-07-24), ours, plainly: this record previously read "SOLD $199 fixed-price (no Best Offer, so $199 is the realized price)." That was false. Our liveness probe requested Best Offer status using a dotted eBay field selector that returns nothing at all on a completed listing, so every sold copy was logged as offer-free by default and captioned as a fixed-price sale — every one of the 329 probes in our sweep report came back "bestOffer: false", 350 of 350 across both report files, not one true, against a 63.4% Best-Offer rate (142 of 224) in our own Browse harvest. That is an instrument measuring nothing. The same dotted-selector fault also blanked the end time on all 381 stored rows, which is why we had believed eBay published no sale date; a full-detail probe returns it, and the true dates above come from that probe. Both the selector and the ledger are fixed. Re-probed properly, item 278102751461 shows 4 Best Offers and eBay does not disclose its sale price. The claim is withdrawn, not restated — we do not publish a figure we cannot establish. Net effect: after this correction Thinner carries ZERO realized unsigned-trade comps, which is less than we claimed and exactly as much as we can prove.

Book-club edition (the trap): $8–$25. Book Club Edition (BCE) is the dominant trap — near-worthless, routinely mislisted as a "first edition." — a fraction of a true first; never pay first-edition money for one.

Condition is everything in this $75–$350 band: a clipped jacket, ex-library markings, or rear-board bumps cut value 40–70%, while a crisp fine/fine unclipped copy sits at the $250–$350 top. Signed/inscribed is the real money — Stephen King "Bachman" signatures are scarce (he signed few before/at the 1985 reveal) and push copies to $1,500–$5,000+; an inscription dated around the reveal (e.g. 4/4/85) or "as Richard Bachman" carries the strongest premium. THE #1 SEPARATOR FOR THIS TITLE: the $12.95 PRICE on the front dust-jacket flap. The true first trade DJ is priced $12.95 and UNCLIPPED; the Book Club Edition jacket has NO price printed on the flap (and the BCE board is cheaper/thinner, often with a small blind-stamp dimple at the lower rear corner). A "first edition" with a blank-priced or clipped flap is almost always a BCE or a married/price-clipped jacket — the most common mislisting. Also confirm the copyright page reads exactly "First Printing, November, 1984" AND that the number line runs the full ascending 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 — NAL retained that identical statement on later printings, so the statement alone proves nothing; the lowest digit present IS the printing (a 4th starts at 4, a 6th at 6), and later NAL printings are common and worth a fraction. (Prompt's "Doubleday gutter code" is a red herring — Thinner is NAL, not Doubleday.) WHAT THE BAND RESTS ON, PLAINLY: after the 2026-07-24 correction recorded above, this title has NO realized unsigned-trade comp of any kind. The only priced unsigned reference we cite is stephenkingcollector at $75–$175 fine (Aug 2023), which sits below this range; the priced dealer records (Bauman, Second Story) are SIGNED copies and are barred from informing the unsigned band; the one unsigned dealer record (Downtown Brown) is a sold-item entry carrying no disclosed price. The $150–$350 range is therefore a held retail band, not a comped one, and its $350 top is the least supported figure on this page — a retail/asking-derived ceiling rather than a realized-sale figure, and we would rather say so than dress it up. The two verified unsigned firsts that sold on eBay in July 2026 both carried live Best Offers, so their $199 and $250 are asking prices, not sale prices, and we decline to move the range in either direction on numbers we cannot establish. To test the ceiling honestly we would need realized fine/fine unclipped sales; dealer asking prices are not evidence.
